San Francisco - November 12, 2008

New Relic, Inc., the leading provider of Ruby on Rails application performance management solutions, today announced that an average of 170 new customers per month have adopted RPM since its introduction in late May, 2008. Deployed as a subscription-based service, the powerful application performance tool now has more than 850 customers who use RPM to manage their production Rails applications.

"We are delighted to see such rapid growth in our business," said Lew Cirne, New Relic founder and CEO. "We have seen especially strong momentum since our September product announcements, which is encouraging given the economic climate. We have a created a very capable product which is just what the Rails community needs right now - a cost-effective solution that enables developers to quickly detect, diagnose and fix application performance problems in real time. We also have assembled a talented team of people who have built successful companies and who understand application management."

Only 10 months after New Relic was founded, and 5 months after its product launch, more than 850 companies and developers are using RPM to monitor their production web applications. Subscribers include 37signals, iOffer, OurStage, Getty Images, and Shopify. New Relic partners include Engine Yard and Pivotal Labs.

Customer Adoption

Many of the leading Web application and software-as-a-service providers have become New Relic subscribers including iOffer, OurStage.com, 37signals, Getty Images, and the retailer Hot Topic. "RPM is invaluable for pinpointing hotspots and helping us to decide on the next most important part of the app to optimize. The New Relic tools help us prioritize development and give us instant feedback on how well our changes are working," said Sam Stephenson of online application provider 37signals.

New Capital Investment

New Relic also announced that it has received $6 million in new venture financing. Leading the round was Trinity Ventures. Series A investor Benchmark Capital also participated. The company plans to use the funds to expand the sales, marketing and product development functions. Benchmark general partner Peter Fenton has been elected chairman of the New Relic board of directors. Dan Scholnick, of Trinity, has been named a director.

Other recent milestones:

  • RPM Lite was introduced in September, 2008 providing a free, fully supported version of RPM for unlimited use with Rails applications. More than 1400 customers have subscribed to RPM Lite in its first two months.
  • New Relic was named one the Ten IT Management Start-ups to Watch for 2008 by Network World which noted that the company’s tools help IT professionals to "do more work with fewer resources and streamline operational processes."

How to Get RPM

New Relic RPM provides deep visibility into the performance of production Rails applications. The real-time metrics provided through New Relic RPM are presented in the context of the running application through an easy to understand graphical interface, allowing rapid discovery and analysis of performance bottlenecks and the pieces of the applications causing them. New Relic RPM installs as a Rails plug-in in seconds allowing critical performance data to be collected immediately.
