As the public sector and its thousands of industrial partners transition away from legacy on-premises data centers toward dynamic, cloud-native architectures, the complexity of their environments has exploded. Along with this complexity comes a sustained and growing need for the most stringent security requirements to support the most sensitive and mission-essential workloads.

That’s why New Relic is excited to announce a pivotal step in solving this complexity head-on: our commitment to achieving FedRAMP® High authorization and Department of Defense (DoD) Impact Level 4 (IL4) authorizations on AWS GovCloud (US) for the New Relic Observability Platform.

The value of FedRAMP High and DoD IL4

FedRAMP High is the most stringent FedRAMP security baseline, requiring more than 400 security controls. It is designed to protect the government’s most sensitive unclassified data in cloud computing environments.

DoD IL4 is designed to support DoD Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

As the public sector transitions from legacy data centers to dynamic, cloud-native architectures, the complexity of their digital environments has reached an inflection point. To support the government’s most sensitive and mission-essential workloads, agencies need more than just visibility—they need a secure, intelligent orchestration layer. By committing to the FedRAMP High and IL4 path, we are reinforcing our long-term commitment to public sector customers, helping them modernize and operate with confidence.

As a leader in observability for the public sector, New Relic helps agencies gain intelligent insights to maintain uptime and reliability of their most critical software. New Relic’s path to High and IL4 will allow for platform-wide standardization, including:

  • Full-Stack Visibility without Silos: The New Relic Observability Platform allows engineers to correlate logs, infrastructure, and applications in a single telemetry platform, even within highly regulated environments.
  • Enhanced Digital Experiences: By providing deep insights into how users interact with websites and applications, New Relic helps agencies identify and resolve issues before they impact the public.
  • Accelerated and De-Risked Cloud Migration: As agencies modernize their IT infrastructure and move to the cloud, New Relic offers crucial visibility into application dependencies and performance. This data-driven approach allows for better planning, mitigates risks during transition, and ensures the reliability of services in cloud environments.
  • End-to-End AI Visibility: With New Relic AI Monitoring, agencies can ensure AI applications are not only performing optimally, but are also operating securely. The capability provides comprehensive visibility across the entire AI stack, including the ability to monitor active LLMs and identify any unapproved instances.

Building with a trusted partnership

Achieving the highest level of federal authorization requires a partner who understands the rigor of the High baseline. To achieve this effort, New Relic is partnering with one of our strategic advisory partners, Coalfire Systems, Inc. (Coalfire), a premier FedRAMP advisory and assessment firm. Coalfire’s proven experience in navigating federal security requirements will help us accelerate our ability to deliver a FedRAMP High and IL4 authorized platform. Coalfire brings not only experience, but also credibility to our FedRAMP program as a leader in FedRAMP High and DoD implementations.

Federal and defense agencies operating at the highest security impact levels rely on real‑time operational visibility to support mission‑critical systems. We’re proud to advise New Relic as they pursue FedRAMP High and IL4, helping them align modern observability capabilities with the rigorous security and compliance expectations of the U.S. Government.

New Relic is expanding our long-standing history with Schellman Compliance, LLC (Schellman) as our third-party assessment organization (3PAO) for both our FedRAMP High and IL4 authorizations. Schellman is the leading FedRAMP assessor of cloud service offerings, bringing over a decade of assessment experience.

Achieving FedRAMP High and DOD IL4 isn’t just about checking a box, it’s a signal to the public sector that a platform is ready to support truly critical workloadsNew Relic has built something important, and we’re proud to bring the experience and perspective needed to help them get there. This is exactly where deep technical rigor and real-world experience make a difference.

New Relic has used Schellman as our 3PAO since our initial FedRAMP Moderate authorization in 2020.
