January 16 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US, a holiday to reflect on Dr. King’s contributions and celebrate his legacy through volunteerism and service.

Like many people, when we think of Dr. King, we think of his iconic I Have a Dream speech. The particular part of his speech where he shares his dreams for a reimagined America almost didn’t happen. At the urging of gospel artist Mahalia Jackson, Dr. King improvised this part of the speech. Can you imagine if Dr. King did not share his dreams with the 250,000-person crowd? This legendary speech provided us with a framework for inclusion and transformation for communities of color and other marginalized groups, to encourage equity for all.

Dr. King’s dream was one of many victories during the civil rights movement. His legacy continues to inspire practices that society and companies can implement to ensure a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future. As our society continues to build upon his legacy, we began to dream about what it means for New Relic.

How can we build a better New Relic for all Relics? How can we make sure that diversity permeates through all levels of our organization? How do we ensure everyone has an opportunity to succeed?

We are reminded of his book, Where Do We Go from Here. Dr. King’s final gift was written with an outlined plan for the future: “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.”

Our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work uses learnings from our past to create a vision for a better New Relic. It’s a critical step to purposefully make space for underrepresented and marginalized communities at New Relic, especially in senior-level roles. We know that when we have diverse voices at the table, we are at our best. We are able to create the best product for our customers, be the forward-thinking innovators needed to drive success, and create a workplace where everyone belongs and thrives.

Dr. King’s work is personal to us. We are committed to making our dreams and the dreams of all Relics around the world a reality. Dr. King once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

This work not only matters, but it's also critical to our success as a company.
