How New Relic ERGs have come together at the intersection of culture and inclusion

Since beginning my time at New Relic, I’ve found community in the Relics of Color and the Women at New Relic employee resource groups (ERGs). These groups provide a greater sense of belonging for Relics to find representation that reflects their full self. As a Black woman leader in sales, I show up in many spaces with all the intersections of myself. It’s my pleasure and privilege to share how this year’s Black History Month programming and the International Women’s Day Symposium brought Relics globally together for connection, education, and allyship.

For the Culture: Celebrating Black History Month at New Relic

Black culture has shaped the world in countless ways, the Relics of Color ERG elected “For the Culture” as the anchoring theme for the programming throughout February. From trivia to book club gatherings, expressions of art to yoga sessions, these ERG-led events provided a mainstage For the Culture to be celebrated throughout Black History Month.

There was space for everyone to tap in where they needed to. With special programming to support the unique experiences of Black Relics, our affinity groups organized impactful connections for Black Girl Magic and Black Boy Joy.

Employee Spotlights

At New Relic we have exceptional Relics that make our culture its own. The employee spotlights of Black Relics showcasing how their culture has influenced their career and the work they do at New Relic was some of the most inspiring parts of all our programming.

"I grew up in an immigrant home with a first-generation mindset. We, like a lot of folks, wanted to improve the outcomes for the next generation, make life more comfortable, and increase our options in a place with unlimited upside and potential. My father expected us to pursue careers with a high level of academic rigor. We had to pursue the "hard" sciences. There was little tolerance for career paths outside of STEM. And the bar was high in our house even with those constraints. The sentiment was that the college degree was in our house the high school degree. My father and mother both pushed us to always remember the scarcity of our roots and walk with humility but be proud of where we came from, remember our roots, and bring honor to those who made it possible for us to be here." —Kwasi A.

"Since I was in high school, I’ve always been passionate about Black representation in industries where we typically aren’t seen. My culture influences me to be the best at what I do, and bring my authentic self to the table." —Zyria Lott

"Black culture is what I live and breathe. My culture has influenced me to show up as my bold, bright, black authentic self every day. To be able to create connections with a great deal of professionals in tech, and potentially connect them to their next big opportunity, is something that I love to do every day at New Relic." —Diamond Bond

"Joining the tech industry as a Black woman has allowed me to become a part of a community driving change in the world while also representing the change that I've always wanted to see. My culture is powerful and I love bringing it to work every day." —Essence Walden

Inspiring Inclusion

The Women at New Relic adopted the 2024 International Women’s Day theme, “Inspiring Inclusion.” This year’s theme is signified by the heart gesture. At the heart of our programming is acknowledging that when we recognize the contributions of women, we have a better world in which to live and work. And as a woman, I know that when women feel included, this inspires them to be their best selves in all aspects of their lives.

Inclusivity was highlighted by our Women at New Relic members sharing what is means to #inspireinclusion.

"I believe inclusion goes beyond mere representation. Inclusion is to foster environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. When I joined New Relic, I was a little nervous and anxious as these were my first steps onto the corporate journey. But from day one, I have felt welcomed and valued. Each task, project, and interaction with my seniors and colleagues has contributed to my growth both professionally and personally. It is all thanks to the supportive and inclusive environment and guidance provided by the team and organization." —Jyothi Surampudi
